چکیده

We read the article entitled “Importance of epicardial adipose tissue thickness measurement in obese adolescents, its relationship with carotid intima-media thickness, and echocardiographic findings” by Boyraz et al with interest1. They found a close relationship between epicardial adipose tissue thickness and some echocardiograhic parameters in obese adolescents to early detection of cardiac dysfunction. Thanks to the authors for their contributions. In present study, transthoracic echocardiographic examinations were performed by only a single experienced pediatric cardiologist. They showed a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of left ventricular posterior wall diameters, left ventricular mass index and ejection fraction but not in interventricular septal diameters and thickness, fractional shortening. The measurements of these parameters must be very sensitive. We think, an another experienced cardiologist blinded to previous results should perform echocardiograhy in order to avoid intraobserver and interobserver differences. Additionally, there are few data about the impact of obesity on diastolic function in children. In the present article, diastolic functions of the patients with obesity were not normal and they were significantly different from those of the lean children. In another study, Lin et al showed that epicardial fat thickness was significantly independently associated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and might be involved in its pathogenesis2-4. We need further studies to best understand the relationship between epicardial fat thickness and diastolic dysfunction.

Echocardiographic Epicardial Adipose Tissue as a New Indicator of Cardiovascular Risk

Abstract Background and Purpose: Epicardial fat is the true visceral fat located around the heart, particularly around sub-epicardial coronary arteries that may locally interact and modulate the coronary arteries and myocardium through paracrine or vasocrine secretion of anti-inflammatory and proatherogenic cytokines. Most previous studies have used echocardiography and reported controversia...

Evaluation oF Epicardial Fat and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Obese Children

BACKGROUND Epicardial fat has a role in cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVES To assess epicardial fat and its relation with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in obese adolescents with metabolic syndrome (MetS). PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 60 obese adolescents and 25 control subjects. According to the presence or absence of MetS, obese subjects were divided into two subgroups. ...

Importance of epicardial adipose tissue thickness measurement in obese adolescents, its relationship with carotid intima-media thickness, and echocardiographic findings.

AIM The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) and echocardiographic parameters, such as carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), myocardial performance index (MPI), left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic function, and LV mass index in adolescents with obesity. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and thirty eight obese adol...

Relationship of Epicardial Adipose Tissue Thickness with Early Indicators of Atherosclerosis and Cardiac Functional Changes in Obese Adolescents with Metabolic Syndrome

OBJECTIVE Epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) is suggested as a new cardiometabolic risk factor. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is a potential indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). We investigated the association of EATT with carotid IMT and cardiac functional changes in obese adolescents with MS. METHODS One hundred thirty-eight obese...

Correlation Between Epicardial Fat Thickness by Echocardiography and Other Parameters in Obese Adolescents

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally and affects people of all ages. Recent studies have shown that visceral adipose tissue measured by magnetic resonance imaging and/or computed tomography correlates positively with epicardial adipose tissue. Epicardial fat, which is correlated to several metabolic parameters, can be assessed by echocardiography. The aim ...
